Basic Tour: Data Entry Screen
|
|
You have arrived at the Data Entry Screen, the heart of the PalmSurv application.
On this screen, you can enter and edit the International Phonetic Alphabet form for a gloss elicited in the village of Lewada.
The first gloss, "(his) head", is shown between two arrows. Tap on it, and you will see the extended gloss: "het (bilong em)".
The IPA form for this gloss has already been entered. It is above the gloss, with a cursor flashing at the end. To modify
the gloss, use the provided IPA keyboards. At the base of the screen, you see the most common IPA consonants. At top right are the common
vowels. And just below the gloss are some common diacritics. To access other IPA characters, try tapping the Aux, Smart,
and Diacr tabs.
Aux keyboard tab selected, showing less common IPA consonants and vowels.
|
Go ahead and try typing. To do this effectively, there are two Graffiti characters that you need to learn: space and backspace.
To make a space, tap on the left side of the "ABC" Graffiti area and swipe to the right. Do the opposite to backspace.
(Note: if you are using a Palm with a keyboard, you can also type the space or backspace. This works for the Simulator as well.)

Try modifying a vowel with some diacritics:
- Enter a space after the IPA form.
- Select the Main keyboard, and tap on the "e".
- Tap on the subscript umlaut, third from bottom right in the diacritics area below the gloss.
The umlaut appears below the "e".
- Select the Diacr keyboard, and tap on the double acute accent. It is in the second row from the botton on the far left side of the screen.
The "e" is now modified by both the subscript umlaut and the double acute accent. Note that after you enter the accent from the Diacr keyboard,
the keyboard tab reverts automatically to the Main keyboard to speed up further data entry.
Now tap on the arrow to the right of the gloss. Now the next gloss in the list, and its IPA form, are displayed.
Keep tapping until you reach the fifth gloss, "(his) eye".
We are done with the IPA Data Entry screen for now. Tap the "Villages" tab at top right.
